Unawatuna Dive Sites on the South Coast of Sri Lanka

At our around 16 different Unawatuna Dive Sites with different depth from 6 to 30 m we offer Reef Dives, Rock Dives, Wreck Dives and Night Dives.

Hard and soft corals are at the most reef dive sites up to 18 m unfortunately rare. In 1997 the "El Nino", surface current with high water temperatures reached also the west and south coast of Sri Lanka and bleached a lot of the coral reefs. Since this time coral starts growing slowly again.

At the deeper Unawatuna Dive Sites there are mostly rocky areas with deep valeys to explore. Close to the Galle harbour divesites there are our wreck dive sites on a sandy ground with the famous "Rangoon" Wreck on a depth of 30 m, the SS Oreste on a depth of 22 m and the Galle Ship Wreck with a depth of 18 m.

At the reefs you can find a lot of macrow staff, many different nudibranches, different coral fish of the Indian Ocean, Sting Rays on the sandu bottom and at the Unawatuna Dive Site No. 8,"Napoleon Reef" you see mostly also the Napoleon Wrasse.

The most soft corals and fish live are at the two deeper wrecks. Mostly there are hundreds and thousand of Sweet Lips and different other fish. Barakudas, Trevalies, Sting rays are also mostly spotted there. Sometime you can also see, mostly at the month from January to March, Whale Sharks, Reef Sharks and Mantas, but these are realy seldom. You can be hapy when you can spot one of these creatures.
