Unawatuna Diving Centre, PADI Resort S-36133, offers the perfect holiday under and above the water.
Our Dive Centre is located about 4 km south of Galle City. The 2 km long bay of Unawatuna is lined with palm trees and known to be one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. Here, directly off the ater you'll find our Dive Centre.
Apart from occasional weather restrictions you can dive here perfectly between October till the end of April. Underwater vision depends on high and low tide, usually between 5 - 25 meters.
From end of April onwards the diving on the west- and south coast is influenced by the monsoon. The sea is sometimes rough and the underwater vision can be considerably less. Diving, with the mentioned restrictions, is normally still possible on a daily basis by choosing specific dive sites. Therefor our UNAWATUNA DIVING CENTRE is open the whole year round.
Usually the south-west monsoon blows continuously from the south-west and carries more humid air from the Indian continent. Sometimes there are strong winds and rain but on average never longer than an hour or two. Daily sunshine is even during the monsoon period 8 hours a day.
Day temperatures are around 30 to 32 Celsius and night temperatures 26 to 28 Grad Celsius. Water temperature is the whole between 26 to 30 Celsius.
Swimming for you and your kids is also possible the whole year round - Unawatuna Bay is protected by a reef that prevents high waves.
From the beginning of April till the end of September we operate our NILAVELI DIVING CENTRE on the untouched north-east coast Sri Lanka's.
Here the north-east monsoon ends beginning of April and the dive season here starts with a calm sea and excellent underwater vision.

The Diving Centre was re-opened in 1999 and since then managed by a international team of competent PADI-Instructors.
First class compressors (made by Bauer) speedily fill the 10 and 12 l diving bottles.
30 complete Scubapro diving gears can be rented. Each jacket has its own security buoy.

The spacious Diving Centre has a large locker room and a well sized training-room. We have a large cleaning basin for your equipment, and afterwards your suit can dry perfectly in the shade. Again you see that all is taken care of.

At the diving base you have the possibility to practice land and boat diving tours (all grades of difficulty). There are four diving boats available, which can bring you to the desired diving locations. Every boat contains a maximum of 8 divers.

If you are willing to, you can attend guided underwater excursions (diving instructor/diving guide) in a group of at the most 4 people or explore the diving areas by yourself.

Since the beginning of the centre security is of greatest importance to us. First we introduce you to all details of the base and provide a briefing.

In addition our base has a stationary oxygen supply and a Wenoll system installed on each of the boats. The boat guides, diving guides and instructors are all trained in first aid assistance. Regularly the crews practice rescue training - you can participate by request.

The diving base offers courses for beginners and advanced divers, e.g. "Discover Scuba Diving" (minimum age: 8), basic diving licence, PADI OWD - Divemaster. All other special licences/patents, like UW-orientation, night diving, diving security, diving rescue, wrack diving can be done under specialized guidance. You can also prepare yourself intensively for your PADI diving instructor examination. After your preparation we can help you to find the right IDC/IE course.A half-day nanny can take care of your children while you dive.

After the diving activities or the instructive courses all divers and non-divers sit together, enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea and exchange their impressions and experiences. For recreation there are comfortable lounging chairs. An open air restaurant next to the base offers snacks and refreshments. In the evening we can sit together and chat while watching the beautiful sunset.

Frequently tuk-tuk drivers and "helpful" locals bring unsuspecting tourist to the wrong destination. They want to earn a commission from cheating tourists.
Insist on being brought to "Unawatuna Diving Centre" on the main road (Matara Road). On the outside of our building you can clearly read our name.
Don't believe the tale of "They are closed after Tsunamie" or "They are fully booked"!
We are open, and everything works fine.

Cancellation Fees

Cancelations made 90 days or more before the reservation date are free of charge. We will refund you complete deposit of 50 %.
Cancelation made 45 days to 89 days before the reservation date will be charged 25 % of the total reservation amount. We will refund you the half of your deposit.
Cancelations made 44 days or less before the reservation date will be charged the full deposit of 50 %.

Quality of accomodation
All rooms and cabanas are equiped with beds, bed sheets, towels and mosquito nets and do have individual toilets and showers.
A ceiling fan is mounted above the bed.

Arrival and Departure
Check in time is 2:00 p.m., check out time is 11:00 a.m.

Safe Deposit of Valuables
A Safe Deposit Box is available at our reception. The ROCKSIDE and the Unawatuna Diving Centre are not responsible for the loss of any valuables.
